POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT -- The Tellin’ Stories Project

Bilingual Parent Organizer



The Tellin’ Stories Project connects families, schools and communities as purposeful partners in the education process. By employing the strengths of parents – their nationalities and cultural backgrounds, native languages, knowledge and experiences – Tellin’ Stories helps to build respectful and successful school environments. Our success has been recognized with a MetLife Award, a segment on PBS To the Contrary, articles in The Washington Post and several national presentations. Tellin’ Stories is a DC-based project of Teaching for Change, a national social justice non-profit organization that transforms schools into centers of justice where students learn to read, write and change the world.

Tellin’ Stories seeks to hire a Bilingual Parent Organizer to oversee the family-school program and support the citywide initiative. Her/his responsibilities will include the following:

• Designing, facilitating and evaluating weekly/monthly workshops with parent leaders in two schools—Brightwood Elementary, a DC public school and Cool Spring Elementary, a PG County Public School;

• Recruiting participants for the workshops and providing support for parent-initiated events and actions;

• Identifying parent leaders to assume responsibility for the program and providing leadership training and other opportunities for parents to develop leadership skills;

• Translating as needed – both in writing and orally – at Tellin’ Stories workshops and meetings at various schools in the DC area;

• Attending weekly staff meetings and bi-weekly organizational meetings;

• Documenting the work at the site and participating in project evaluation;

• Presenting at citywide and national forums;

• Supporting the fundraising effort; and fulfilling administrative duties as needed.



Skills Expected:

 Fluent in English and Spanish—both written and spoken;

 Excellent translation technique/ability to speak well in front of groups in both English and Spanish;

 Experience in parent involvement, education/public schools, and community organizing;

 Great interpersonal relationship skills;

 Access to reliable transportation;

 Eager to learn and able to work both independently and as part of a team;

 Able to juggle multiple responsibilities with energy and enthusiasm, assess the workload and chip in wherever appropriate, supporting the success of our team in various ways, sometimes without direct instruction or supervision;

 Strong writing, evaluation and reporting skills;

 Familiar with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, desktop publishing or related software;

 Familiarity with grant proposal-writing a plus.

Full-time position (40 hours/week) with benefits; Salary: $40,000
